Solar Power Overview

(Rated 11 times)

At a glance..

This factsheet will present a brief overview of the major solar technologies, and provide references where more information may be found on each.

The details..

As public awareness of the environmental damage caused by conventional energy sources increases, more people are turning to solar power. However, there is some confusion over how it can be used effectively. This book aims to clear up that confusion by presenting a brief overview of major solar technologies and providing references for further information.

The availability of sunlight varies depending on location, time of day/year, weather conditions etc., so selecting an appropriate site is crucial when installing solar panels. Although costs associated with equipment installation may seem high initially compared to traditional fuel counterparts, these systems cost less in terms of lifetime operation expenses.

Conventional fuels carry hidden costs which are passed onto society rather than directly charged to consumers such as emissions from fossil fuel combustion contributing towards acid rain & global warming; oil spills causing damage to environmentally sensitive areas; hazardous radioactive waste generated through nuclear electricity generation requiring transportation & disposal; military presence required in Persian Gulf region ensuring secure passage for petroleum shipments.

Types of Solar Energy include Thermal Systems (using sun's heat) and Light Utilizing Systems (directly using sunlight). The order in which they're discussed isn't intended as priority order.
